My first major coffee table book lavishly illustrated
Pennsylvania's wild and natural areas and was published by Voyageur Press in 2006. The book is titled Wild Pennsylvania:
A Celebration of Our State's Natural Beauty and continues to be available in many book stores, including Borders, Barnes & Noble and numerous others. It is
also available online through Amazon and the many other online book sellers The text for the book was written by Richard
D. Whiteford with an introduction by Pennsylvania Governor Edward G. Rendell. Wild Pennsylvania contains 184 of my photographs and covers the entire state of Pennsylvania,
from the tidal marshes near Philadelphia to the shore of Lake Erie and from the extreme southwest corner of Greene County,
just up the creek from West Virginia , to a summer wildflower lined pond near the West Branch of the Delaware River in a tiny
corner of northeast Wayne County; and everything in between. I am extremely honored to have Peter Pinchot and Scott Weidensaul
write jacket notes for the book. Peter Pinchot is the grandson of Gifford Pinchot and a noted environmentalist and conservationist
in his own right. Scott Weidensaul has authored more than two dozen books, most recently, Return to Wild America. By purchasing a copy of Wild Pennsylvania, you will also be contributing to a better natural environment
in Pennsylvania. Through the generosity of my publisher, Voyageur Press, a portion of the proceeds of Wild Pennsylvania
will go to Pennsylvania Audubon
for their conservation projects in Pennsylvania |
To accompany the book, I spent nearly three months developing a multimedia program. The program
lasts approximately 48 minutes and contains over 400 images, most of which do not appear in the book. The narration was done
by my daughter, Tara Gadomski, a professional freelance broadcaster journalist, and recorded in a New York City studio. Subtle
background music, provided by some very talented artists from Creative Commons, accompanies the images in several segments,
as they fade, pan and zoom. The program covers the entire state of Pennsylvania. Over five different software programs were used to put the whole program together. It is shown
through high resolution digital projection, with accompanying sound. I am available to present this program to your organization, club or group. After the presentation,
personally signed copies of my book, Wild Pennsylvania, will be available for purchase. Please email or telephone me
to arrange a presentation or for more information. If you would like to view a segment from the program, click on the link below. Unfortunately
because of the limitations of the internet, you will only be able to view a very low resolution version, of the high resolution
version you will see at your presentation. |

"I've been to some scenic places in our neighbor state to the east, but
this book is fantastic for the photography alone as well as the narrative. The scenes are breathtaking and certainly gave
me a new respect for Pennsylvania's natural beauty. It's hard to fathom that some of these wonderful places can be reached
in a few hours! I'm ready to hit the road now!" Anne Lowery, Henderson Public Library (Jefferson, Ohio) “The true treasure of this book is the stupendous photography of
Michael Gadomski, who has captured a plethora of stunning shots from around the state and in all seasons, from humble wildflowers
to expansive vistas, all of which amply illustrate how "industrialized" Pennsylvania can be a real surprise for nature lovers.

For a book that is clearly created as a medium for its photographs, it
is surprisingly well-balanced between its words and images. Visually it is a beautiful coffee-table book that simply begs
to be displayed. I cannot emphasize enough the quality of the images. They are so stunning as to remind you of National Geographic's
photographs. When I picked it up, I expected the text would be kept to a minimum and, as is the case with many "photography
books," would consist of a cursory overview that would simply fill the space between the images. In truth, the text is as integral to the book as the images. Whiteford takes the reader through the geological and environmental history
of the state as a whole and then through each region on its own, while mixing in bits of history, trivia, and legends. Further, he accomplishes this without becoming dry and lecturing. The combination
of the photos and the text come together like traveling with an amazingly informed travel guide. Both men are clearly passionate
about the state's wild areas and this shines through in their work. Before having children, I used to hike fairly regularly. This book has
made me regret not taking the time to get back into the woods. What particularly struck me was that it features not only the
beautiful landscapes and vistas, but also captures more intimate details, such as spider webs in the morning dew or frost
patterns on tiny leaves. These are details that you normally only see when you are there in person. They effectively capture
the feeling of being there, without worrying about wet feet, blisters, and deer ticks. This is a perfect gift book for hikers, hunters, environmentalists, photographers,
history and science buffs, or anyone else that would enjoy seeing everything that wild Pennsylvania has to offer." Mike Ashworth, Electric City, (Scranton, PA)
"Explore the beauty of the Keystone State through 175 color photographs
of mountains, forests, flowers, trees, wetlands, streams and native wildlife. Gov. Ed Rendell writes in the foreword that
the book "cannot replicate an actual visit," but the lush photographs, descriptive essays and photograph captions make for
a nice armchair trip on a winter's day." Mary O. Bradley, The Patriot-News (Harrisburg, PA)
